MAM CHILOÉ
The Museum of Modern Art Chiloé (MAM Chiloé) exists since 1988 and is located in the Municipal Park of Castro, Isla Grande de Chiloé, Chile. It is one of the southernmost museums in the world and houses a permanent collection of national contemporary art from the 1980s to the present, which brings together the work of more than 300 artists. Self-defined as an active center, the museum organizes numerous exhibitions, programs, activities and workshops that stimulate the local cultural scene and participate in the dissemination of contemporary arts in all its forms, free from political or religious ideologies.
FACILITIES
MAM Chiloé has a face-to-face residency program dedicated to research, experimentation, production and presentation of contemporary practices in any specialty. “What the residence offers is the environment, a place that has a different culture from the rest of Chile, a special place, {…} the artist here feels in a different place and therefore understands to also carry out different works”, explains Eduardo Feuerhake, Director of MAM Chiloé.
As the only contemporary museum on the island, many activities such as workshops, classes for children and adolescents or open studies are organized around residents that involve local communities. “This is important to us because students or visitors can learn about the process of the work, but they can also later see the result of it on display,” says Catalina Pavéz, head of Educational and Mediation Programs.
RESIDENCE
The residence offers the possibility of hosting up to six artists at the same time, in a comfortable and heated space to live up to three months, with double or single bedrooms, shared bathrooms and kitchen. It also offers access to the museum’s archives and collection, a library, shared workspaces and contacts with the local art scene.
RESIDENCES MODALITIES
The type of residence is only one and free. No trips or specific connections are organized with the community or the territory, so the resident artists themselves must undertake this type of activity.
DURATION
Applications for residency can be made at any time of the year, they have a maximum length of stay of three months and are defined in agreement with the artists.
